Box Score NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University men's basketball team suffered a hard-fought loss to Skyline rival, Mount Saint Mary, by a final score of 71-64, at the Kaplan Center on Monday evening. The Maccabees drop their conference record to 0-2, while the Knights bump their record to 1-1 in Skyline play.
Yeshiva got off to a sluggish start, as the Knights were able to build a 33-15 lead, with 3:28 left to play in the opening half. The Maccabees were able to shrink the deficit to 34-19 at the end of the half.
Trailing 56-42 in the second stanza, the Maccabees turned momentum into their favor by scoring 10 unanswered points in a span of just over three minutes to cut the Knights' lead to 56-52, with 4:44 remaining in regulation time. After Mount Saint Mary drained a three-pointer, freshman guard
Judah Cohen countered by draining back-to-back shots from downtown to pull Yeshiva within one, 59-58, with 3:34 left to play.
After Yeshiva's defense forced a turnover, junior forward
Michael Berg was fouled. He successfully hit both free throws to give Yeshiva its first lead of the game, 60-59, with 2:12 remaining.
From that point, Mount Saint Mary seized back control of the game, by scoring six unanswered points to take a 65-60 lead, with 1:14 remaining. The Knights never looked back as they were able to hit key free throws to clinch the contest, 71-64.
Berg scored a game-high 23 points, while senior forward
Shelby Rosenberg added 12 points with two steals. Cohen produced 10 points, while junior forward
Dean Pienica grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
The Maccabees will be back in action on Wednesday for a Skyline matchup with Farmingdale State, on Wednesday at George E. Nold Hall, beginning at 9:00 p.m.
