Men's Basketball Rallies Past Sarah Lawrence

Box Score

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University men's basketball team earned a key Skyline win over Sarah Lawrence College, 71-54, on the campus of Baruch College on Thursday evening. The game was held during the 19th annual Macs Madness event. Yeshiva advances its record to 5-3 overall, and 3-2 in Skyline games, while Sarah Lawrence drops to 2-7 overall, and 0-5 in conference contests.

The victory did not come easy as the Maccabees trailed by eight, their largest deficit of the game, with 16:12 remaining in regulation time.  Yeshiva would narrow the score 37-33, but Sarah Lawrence answered with a traditional three-point play to go back up by seven, with just under 15 minutes remaining.

The Maccabees came roaring back by scoring seven unanswered points, capped off by a three-point basket from freshman forward Tal Gweta, to tie the game up at 40. After the Gryphons regained the lead, 49-45, the Macs produced a bigger rally, scoring 18 unanswered points in a span of 6:19, capped off by two field goals from senior forward Shelby Rosenberg, to give the home team a commanding 63-49 lead, with just 4:28 left to go. Yeshiva would never surrender the lead for the remainder of the contest and went on to win its third conference game in a row.

In the first half, Yeshiva trailed by as many as seven points. After narrowing the deficit to 24-20, Yeshiva would go on a 9-2 run in the last in the final 5:16 of the half, highlighted by a three-point basket from freshman guard Judah Cohen, to give Yeshiva a 29-26 lead going into the half. That would foreshadow Yeshiva's rally in the second half to win the game.

For the contest, senior guard Shaje Weiss led all scorers with 21 points. He also grabbed seven boards and forced two steals. Rosenberg added 12 points, while Cohen scored 10. Junior forward Michael Berg produced nine points, senior forward Joseph Ammar added eight points, and junior guard Jordan Hod produced seven points, while dishing out a game-high six assists.

Yeshiva will host the Sage Colleges on Saturday at the Max Stern Athletic Center. The Skyline game is scheduled to begin at 8:30 p.m.
