Box Score FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University men's basketball team earned its first Skyline victory of the season, defeating Farmingdale State, by a score of 74-69, on Wednesday evening at George E. Nold Hall. The Maccabees are now 3-3 overall, and 1-2 in Skyline play, while the Rams fall to 0-5 overall, and 0-1 in conference contests.
The Maccabees were led by freshman forward
Michael Hayon, who produced a double-double by scoring a game-high 16 points and grabbing 10 boards. Senior guard
Shaje Weiss added 15 points and six rebounds, while freshman guard
Judah Cohen added 13 points.
After Yeshiva led by as many as 13 points in the second half, the Rams came roaring back to cut Yeshiva's lead to 72-69, with just 18 seconds left. After getting fouled intentionally, senior forward
Eytan Potash successfully converted both free throw attempts to widen Yeshiva's lead to five, with just nine seconds remaining. Yeshiva's defense held Farmingdale scoreless in the final possession to clinch the conference victory.
Back in the first half, Yeshiva held an early 9-8 lead. That advantage would grow, as the Maccabees went on a 9-1 run, in a span of 3:30, to go up 18-9, with 10:48 left to play in the opening half. All nine points in that run were scored by Hayon. That set the tone for the remainder of the contest. Farmingdale made the game close towards the end of the second half, but Yeshiva was able to hang on and earn the key Skyline victory.
For the game, Potash scored 11 points and forced six steals. Junior forward
Michael Berg and classmate
Justin Hod each produced eight points, with the former producing just as many rebounds.
The Maccabees will be back in action on Sunday, for a Skyline contest at Purchase College, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
