SKYLINE CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT CENTRALNEW YORK, N.Y.— After finishing 14-10 overall and 11-7 in Skyline Conference play, the Yeshiva University men's basketball team earned the No. 5 seed for the 2015 Skyline Conference playoffs and will play at No. 4 College at Old Westbury in the first round of the tournament, Tuesday February 24 at 8 p.m.
The winner of this game will play at Sage College on Thursday in the semifinal round. Should the Maccabees advance into the championship game, it will be contested on Sunday March 1 at the highest remaining seed.
Yeshiva enters the tournament on a three game winning streak, which includes a win over Sarah Lawrence College and two wins against Farmingdale State to close out the season.
"Our guys have worked extremely hard this year and it is a testament to their character and will to succeed that they have the right to play for a Skyline Conference championship this year," said Yeshiva head coach,
Elliot Steinmetz. "They should be excited for the opportunity. They've most certainly earned it."
During the regular season, Yeshiva split two games with the College at Old Westbury. The Maccabees won 81-69 at the Max Stern Athletic Center on December 4, before the Panthers were victorious 68-48 in the rematch on Saturday December 7.
This season, Yeshiva has been led by
Benjy Ritholtz who led Yeshiva and the Skyline Conference regular season in scoring, averaging 17.8 points per game, while connecting on a team and conference best 58 three point field goals.
Shelby Rosenberg has been Yeshiva's second leading scorer at 15.3 points per game, while averaging a team-high 8.0 rebounds per game.
Shaje Weiss has averaged 8.9 points per game this season, while shooting a team-high 57.9 percent (77-for-133) from the floor.
The College at Old Westbury comes into tonight's first round match having finished 12-13 overall and 12-6 in Skyline Conference play. The Panthers have been led this season by Mark Gjonlekaj at 12.2 points per game, while Omari Trebuse is averaging 9.5 points per game.
Fans attending the game should be advised, admission is free for all students (Yeshiva and College at Old Westbury) and senior citizens. A $3.00 charge applies to all others.
