Box Score NEW YORK, N.Y. – Behind senior forward
Michael Berg's career-high 31 points, the Yeshiva University men's basketball team earned a convincing opening night win over the City College of New York, 92-66, at the Nat Holtman Gymnasium on Tuesday evening. The Maccabees begin the season 1-0, while the Beavers fall to 0-1.
In addition to his 31 points, Berg grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds for a double-double, made all seven free throws, dished out eight assists, and blocked one shot.
In the opening half, the Beavers held a one-point lead with less than ten minutes remaining. The Maccabees finished the half strong, going on a 10-2 run in the last two minutes to take a 55-33 lead at halftime. Senior forward
Eli Mamann ended the half with a successful jump shot to put Yeshiva in complete control.
In the second half, Berg laid the ball up and in on two separate occasions in the first 1:50 of play to extend the Maccabees' lead to 59-38. Later in the period, senior guard
Jordan Hod nailed a three-point field goal to give Yeshiva a 75-51 advantage. The Beavers never made the game close again as Mamann's three-pointer gave the visiting team its largest lead of the contest, 89-57, with just over seven minutes left in regulation. Yeshiva went on to win by the final score of 92-66.
For the game, Mamann produced 17 points, while junior guard
Judah Cohen added eight points, eight assists, and five rebounds. Freshman guard
Simcha Halpert tacked on 12 points, including two shots from beyond the arc, and senior forward
Dean Pienica tallied nine points. Hod added six points, dished out eight assists, and forced two steals. Sophomore forward
Michael Hayon chipped in with four points, classmate
Tal Gweta scored three, and sophomore guard
Justin Hod produced two points.
Yeshiva will be back in action on Saturday evening, for a road game against the United States Coast Guard Academy, beginning at 8:30 p.m. The game will be a part of the Coaches vs. Cancer Tip-Off Classic.
