Box Score NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University women's volleyball team suffered a hard-fought Skyline Conference loss to Maritime College, in straight sets, on Wednesday evening at the ARC Arena. Set scores were 25-15, 25-18, and 25-12.
Leading the way for the Maccabees (0-10, 0-4 Skyline) was senior middle blocker
Gavriela Colton who produced four kills and had just as many solo blocks. Senior libero
Shaina Hourizadeh produced a match-high 17 digs to help anchor the defense for Yeshiva.
In the opening set, the Privateers (6-5, 1-1 Skyline) led from wire-to-wire as the Maccabees could not generate any momentum. Maritime scored the last four points of the stanza to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
Yeshiva fell behind 19-6 in the second set, but slowly began to chip away at the visiting team's lead as a kill by junior outside hitter
Emily Neckonoff, and a service ace by Hourizadeh, capped off a 12-4 run to help the Maccabees to pull within six, at 24-18. Maritime was able to recover and scored the last point thanks to a service error by Yeshiva to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.
With the Maccabees on the brink, Colton produced a kill and a solo block in back-to-back rallies to give Yeshiva a 3-1 advantage in the set. The Privateers then scored three unanswered point to take the lead. Later in the set, sophomore middle blocker
Sarah Rowan's kill evened the stanza at nine. After Maritime scored the next two points,
Alexander Esther slammed home a kill to narrow the Privateers' lead to 11-10. From that point on, Maritime took over the match by going on a 14-2 run to clinch the set and its first Skyline win of the season.
For the contest, Rowan had three kills, while junior outside hitter
Ilana Leggiere added two. Senior setter
Yael Ghelman and Esther each produced five assists, with the latter having three digs, while Neckonoff added three digs of her own.
The Maccabees will be hosting a Skyline Conference Tri-Match at Baruch College on Sunday. Yeshiva will battle Mount Saint Vincent at 11:00 a.m., and then take on St. Joseph's College L.I. at 3:00 p.m.
