FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University women's tennis team earned a hard-fought Skyline Conference victory over Mount Saint Mary College, 5-4, at the USTA National Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon. It was a rematch of last year's Skyline Conference championship match.
Danielle Carr earns her first victory as head coach of the Yeshiva University women's tennis team. "It is both exciting and celebratory, I smiled the whole way home," Carr said. "For me, this win cements my place in a tradition of the success of the women's tennis program. It is also important for the team, as they can celebrate a hard-fought match. They can see that their hard work in practice pays off, and they are personally able to measure the improvements I see them making every day."
Mount Saint Mary (4-5, 1-3 Skyline) won two out of the three doubles flights, but Yeshiva (1-5, 1-3 Skyline) rallied by going 4-2 in singles play to clinch the conference victory.
Junior
Shana Adler and freshman
Ambre Cherki teamed up to earn Yeshiva's lone double victory (the second position), 8-2. Adler came back to win at No. 2 singles, 7-5, 6-3. Cherki earned a convincing win at the fourth singles flight, 6-3, 6-0.
Junior
Bailey Frohlich earned a narrow two-set win at No. 1 singles, 7-6 (5), 6-3. Sophomore
Leora Moskowitz was victorious at the third singles position, 6-2, 6-2. Sophomore
Alexandra Huberfeld won the opening set of her No. 6 singles flight, but fell in three sets, 2-6, 6-1, 7-6 (4).
It was senior day, as Yeshiva University honored its three graduating seniors,
Hannah Brodskaya,
Sarah Hiller, and
Ilana Sherizen. "Seniors always have a way of anchoring a roster by providing mentoring, support, and veteran experience naturally," Carr said. "I am fortunate to have three this season, one of which was on last year's championship team. Their guidance, leadership, and hard work are genuinely appreciated."
The Maccabees will take on Farmingdale State College, in a key Skyline Conference contest out on Long Island, on Tuesday afternoon. First serve is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
