NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University men's tennis team will battle the United States Merchant Marine Academy, for the Skyline Conference championship, on Sunday at the USTA National Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
Yeshiva will look to win its fifth consecutive Skyline title, while Merchant Marine has reached the conference championship match for the first time since rejoining the Skyline. The winner of Sunday's match will not only win the conference championship, but earn an automatic bid into the NCAA tournament.
The two teams finished top-two in the conference standings. Yeshiva won the Skyline regular season title with an undefeated conference record of 7-0 (currently 12-5 overall). The Mariners went 6-1 in Skyline contests (currently 11-6 overall). In the regular season finale, the two teams faced each other in a battle for the No. 1 seed. The Maccabees won the key Skyline contest, 7-2.
In the semifinal round on Thursday, YU defeated No. 4 Farmingdale State, 5-1. Junior
Adam Rosemblaum led the way in that match by winning every game in both the first doubles flight (with sophomore
Lior Brik) and at #1 singles. In the other semifinal match that evening, Merchant Marine defeated No. 3 Mount Saint Mary, 5-1.
Leading the way for the Maccabeees has been Rosemblaum, who went 5-1 in Skyline singles matches during the regular season, all at the No. 1 position. He also went 5-1 in No. 1 Skyline doubles matches. Junior
Mikey Ozery went unbeaten in Skyline singles play, with three out of his four victories coming in the second flight. Ozery won four out of five conference doubles contests. In the semifinal match against Farmingdale, Ozery won at #2 doubles, 8-1, and at #1 singles, 6-1, 6-1.
Making an impact in his rookie season has been freshman
Dor Gutterman, who went 4-1 in conference singles matches. Two of those four victories came in the second flight. In doubles play, the phenom has won six out of seven Skyline doubles contests and produced an 11-5 record overall. He teamed with Ozery to win at #2 doubles, 8-1, in the conference semifinal match.
Senior
Charlie Friedman won all six of his Skyline singles matches, while going 5-0 in conference doubles contests. He clinched Yeshiva's berth in the championship match by winning the fourth singles position over FSC, 6-1, 6-1.
For Merchant Marine, James Hicks is currently 9-3 in #1 singles matches. Karl Sasse is 8-4 in the fourth singles position.
