Benhamu's Goal Not Enough For Men's Soccer Against New Jersey City University

Box Score

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Yeshiva University men's soccer team suffered a hard-fought loss to New Jersey City University, 3-1, at the Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field, on Friday afternoon. The Gothic Knights remain undefeated, advancing to 3-0, while the Maccabees fall to 2-2.

NJCU dominated possession throughout the opening half, but the defense of the Maccabees kept the Gothic Knights off the scoreboard. The two teams went into the intermission without a goal.

The home team struck early in the second half, as Edric DePaula received a feed from Theo Sanoh and drilled the ball into the back of the net to put the Gothic Knights in front, during the 47th minute. Koshane Marshall was also credited with the assist.

New Jersey City would add to its lead in the 64th minute, as Sanoh soared past a falling Yeshiva defender, powered past freshman goalkeeper Edgar Schottland, and kicked the ball into the cage to put Yeshiva in a 2-0 deficit.

The Maccabeees would get one goal back during the 80th minute, as sophomore forward Alberto Benhamu notched his second tally of the season, to slice YU's deficit in half at 2-1.

Just over two minutes later, Yeshiva committed a foul inside of its own penalty box, earning NJCU a penalty kick. Sanoh was able to convert the opportunity, guiding the ball to his left and past Schottland for the insurance goal.

Freshman forward Jonah Beberman had a chance to pull Yeshiva closer, but his shot was stopped by goalkeeper Eric Lopes Silva, during the 85th minute. Yeshiva could not generate another chance, as NJCU went on to earn the non-conference win by a score of 3-1.

For the afternoon, New Jersey City produced 13 shots on goal, while Yeshiva had five. The Gothic Knights executed six out of the match's seven corner kicks. Schottland made 10 saves for the Maccabees.

Yeshiva will open up Skyline play next Friday, as the Maccabees host the Gryphons of Sarah Lawrence College. The conference contest will take place at Votee Park, beginning at 11:30 a.m.
