NEW YORK – The Yeshiva University women's tennis team will battle No. 1 Farmingdale State College, in the semifinal round of the Skyline Conference Championships, on Thursday evening. First serve at the FSC Tennis Courts will take place at 5:00 p.m.
This marks the fifth time in the last six years that Yeshiva will compete in the conference championships, a run that includes winning the Skyline Championship and becoming the first women's program in school history to compete in the NCAA Tournament, during the 2017-18 season.
The winner of the YU-FSC playoff match will take on the winner of the other Skyline semifinal match between No. 3 Mount Saint Mary College and No. 2 St. Joseph's College Long Island, in the conference championship match this weekend.
The Maccabees went 4-3 in the conference (5-4 overall), good for a three-way tie for third place with Mount Saint Mary and Manhattanville in the Skyline standings. YU will officially enter the championships as the No. 4 seed.
"It has been a tremendous and redemptive regular season," Yeshiva University Head Coach
Danielle Carr said. "This time last year, we only won a couple of matches and had to watch the postseason pass us by. This season has been a complete 360 degree turnaround. We are facing a tough opponent in Farmingdale in the conference semifinals, but we welcome the challenge and will look to bring the skills and fortitude that we have been building on all season to this match."
The key match during the regular season was Yeshiva's 5-4 conference victory over Manhattanville College, back on September 8. With the contest tied, 4-4, it came down to senior
Michal Ladenheim against sophomore Kelsey Ulzheimer, at No. 4 singles, to determine which team would take home the win. Ladenheim won the seven-point tiebreaker to claim the first set, 7-6 (4), and then won every game in the second to clinch the victory for the Maccabees. If Yeshiva lost that fourth singles flight, Manhattanville would have won the match and took YU's place in the Skyline Conference Championships.
"Achieving a spot in the postseason cements Yeshiva as a continuous conference presence and we look to build upon this experience for future seasons," Carr said.
Leading the way for the Maccabees this year has been senior
Shana Adler, who went 6-2 in No. 2 singles matches this season. Third-year player
Bailey Frohlich picked up four victories at the first singles flight during the regular season and earned a pair of wins each at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. First-year player
Deborah Frewa made a big impact on the team, winning four out of five singles flights and earning a 4-2 record in doubles competition.
Meanwhile, Farmingdale State won all seven of its conference matches and went 14-1 overall. Leading the way was sophomore Nicole Ferguson, who won all 13 of her singles contests and produced a 14-1 record in doubles battles. Freshman Anastasia Hoffmasn and sophomore Nicole Tzanetos each won 13 out of 14 singles flights, while second-year player Rosa Lettieri earned 10 victories at No. 2 singles, and just as many victories at the third doubles position.
In its head-to-head meeting in the regular season, back on September 18, FSC defeated Yeshiva by a score of 8-1. Frohlich closed the match strong for the Maccabees, as she earned a tight victory at the first singles position, 7-5, 7-5.
