POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University men's fencing team competed in the Vassar College Invitational, at the Walker Field House, on Sunday afternoon. Yeshiva dropped team battles to Vassar College (21-6), Sacred Heart University (21-6), Drew University (21-6), Denison University (16-11), University of Incarnate Word (22-5), Haverford College (15-12), Stevens Institute of Technology (21-6), and Army (20-7).
The Maccabees' epee team won five duels during the afternoon, while the sabre team earned a victory of its own.
Yeshiva's sabre team defeated Sacred Heart by a score of 6-3. Senior
Sammy Teichberg won all three of his duels, while
Mordechai Sheinson went 2-1. Freshman Brian Lerman added a victory of his own.
Yeshiva's epee team also earned its first victory of the day against Drew University, 5-4. Sophomore
Zaelig Averch won all three bouts, while junior
Joshua Polster went 2-1. Classmate
Ilan Marouani won an epee duel of his own.
Polster and Averch each went won two out of three duels against Vassar, while sophomore
Shmuel Perton and classmate Joseph Stern each earned a win in foil.
The epee team earned its second victory of the day, defeating Denison University by a score of 7-2. Polster and Averch each won all three of their bouts, while Marouani added a victory of his own. Teichberg and Perton each picked up a pair of wins in sabre and foil competition, respectively.
Against Incarnate Word, Teichberg and Polster each went 2-1 in their respective bouts, while Averch earned a win for the epee squad.
Yeshiva's epee team earned a convincing win over Haverford College, 8-1. Averch went 3-0, while Polster and Marouani each won two out of three battles. In sabre, Teichberg and Sheinson each went 2-1.
Polster and Averch each won all three battles to lead the epee team to a 6-3 win over Stevens.
The epee squad concluded the evening with another convincing victory, this time over Army by a score of 7-2. Averch went 3-0, Polster took two out of three bouts, and Marouani added a victory of his own.
Averch went 18-6 during the afternoon, while Polster finished 16-8.
Yeshiva will compete in the MACFA "A" vs. "B" Meet, at Hunter College, on Sunday. The action begins at 10:00 a.m.
