NEW YORK – The Yeshiva University men's fencing team earned a pair of victories at the MACFA "A" vs. "B" meet, on the campus of Hunter College, on Sunday afternoon. Yeshiva defeated Rowan University, 16-11, and then topped The College of New Jersey, 19-8. YU was defeated by Cornell University (22-5), Drew University (23-4), Lafayette College (17-10), and Rutgers University (17-10).
The Maccabees' epee team continued its strong start to the season by winning five out of its six duels as a unit. In their tight 5-4 victory over Cornell, junior
Joshua Polster and sophomore
Zaelig Averch each won two out of three bouts, while junior
Ilan Marouani tallied a win of his own. Averch went a perfect 3-0 against Drew, with Polster chipping in with a victory of his own.
The Macs' epee squad earned a convincing win over Lafayette College, 7-2. Averch once again won all three of his duels, while Polster and Marouani each earned a pair of victories. In the epee team's narrow 5-4 win over Rutgers University, Averch once again swept the three bouts. Polster and Marouani each won a battle. Averch and Polster each went 3-0 against Rowan to lead the epee squad to yet another win.
For the afternoon, Averch went 14-1. Polster earned a record of 9-6.
The foil team earned a dominating 7-2 win over Rowan University. Sophomore
Shmuel Perton won all three of his bouts, while first-year fencer
Charles Grill and sophomore
Dov Tuchman each went 2-1. The three foil fencers each won a duel against Rutgers University.
In sabre, junior
Mordechai Sheinson and freshman
Brian Lerman were each victorious in a battle against Rutgers. Sheinson went 2-1 against Rowan, with Lerman adding a victory of his own. Sheinson picked up a 5-0 victory in his first bout against The College of New Jersey.
Yeshiva will compete in the Drew University Invitational, on Sunday morning, beginning at 10:00 a.m.
