MADISON, N.J. – The Yeshiva University men's fencing team competed in the Drew University Holiday Invitational, at the Simon Forum, on Sunday afternoon. YU suffered defeats to Army (14-13), Stevens Institute (26-1), Vassar College (25-2), Drew University (21-6 and 23-4), Clemson University (14-13), Hunter College (15-12), and Denison University (19-8).
The epee team earned a convincing win over Army by a score of 8-1. Junior
Joshua Polster and sophomore
Zaelig Averch each went 3-0, while junior
Ilan Marouani contributed with a pair of victories. In foil, sophomores
Charles Grill and
Shmuel Perton each won a bout. Senior
Sammy Teichberg swept his sabre battles.
Against Stevens, Polster earned Yeshiva's lone victory in epee competition. Averch and Teichberg each picked up a win in epee and sabre respectively, against Vassar.
Averch and Polster combined to go 6-for-6 against Drew, leading the epee squad to the victory.
The epee team was also victorious against Clemson University, 6-3. Averch went 3-0, Polster took two out of three battles, and Marouani chipped in with a win of his own. In foil, Perton picked up a pair of wins, while Grill and sophomore
Joseph Stern each won once. In sabre, Teichberg went 2-1, while junior
Mordechai Sheinson added a win.
Averch went a perfect 3-0 in the rematch with Drew, while Polster earned a hard-fought epee win.
The Maccabees' epee team dominated the Hawks of Hunter College, 8-1. Averch and Marouani each went 3-0, while Polster took two out of three battles. Teichberg added a win in sabre competition.
In the epee team's tight 5-4 victory over Denison University, Polster won all three of his duels, while Averch went 2-1. Teichberg went 3-0 in his sabre battles.
The Maccabees will compete in the MACFA "B" Round Robin event on Sunday, February 9, on the campus of Stevens Institute of Technology. The competition is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.
