POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University men's fencing team participated in the Vassar College Invitational, at the Walker Field House, on Sunday afternoon. The YU epee team won four battles led by seniors
Zaelig Averch and
Joshua Polster. Averch had an impressive record of 21-3 during the afternoon, while Polster won 14 bouts.
The epee squad earned an impressive victory over Denison University, 6-3. Averch and Polster each went 3-0. The foil squad got edged, 5-4. Freshman
Alexander Siegman and junior
Brian Bendel each went 2-1. In sabre, junior
Brian Lerman won a bout.
The epee team also picked up a 6-3 victory over Cornell University. Polster and Averch once again went undefeated in epee duels. Bendel tallied a win in foil.
Averch led the Maccabees' epee team to a narrow 5-4 win over Stevens Institute of Technology by going 3-0, including a victory in the deciding bout to break a 4-4 tie. Polster chipped in by winning a pair of duels.
Averch also won the tiebreaking bout against Army to give the epee squad another nail-biting 5-4 victory. The Indian Hills native once again went 3-for-3. Polster took two out of three battles.
Polster and Averch each took two out of three duels against Haverford College. Bendel and Siegman each won one bout using the foil weapon.
Averch won all three battles against Vassar College, while Polster earned a win of his own. Siegman picked up the victory with the foil weapon.
Against Sacred Heart University, Averch went 2-1 in epee combat, while Lerman and Siegman each won a bout in sabre and foil, respectively.
Averch won two out of three battles against Drew University, while Polster tacked on a victory of his own.
The men's fencing team dropped its team battles to Vassar (22-5), SHU (23-4), Drew (24-3), Denison (16-11), Cornell (20-7), Haverford (21-6), Stevens (22-5), and Army (22-5).
Yeshiva will participate in the MACFA "A" vs. "B" event, at Drew University, next Sunday morning. The meet is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.
