MADISON, N.J. – The Yeshiva University men's fencing team competed in the MACFA "A" vs. "B" event, on the campus of Drew University, on Sunday afternoon. YU dropped bouts to Rutgers University (21-6), Lafayette College (21-6), Cornell University (22-5), Drew University (22-5), and Rowan University (15-12).
Leading the way for the Maccabees was junior
Zaelig Averch, who went 13-2 during the afternoon and led the epee squad to three victories.
Two of YU's epee wins were tight 5-4 scores over Rutgers and Lafayette. Averch went 3-0 in each of those narrow wins. The Indian Hills native broke a 4-4 tie to clinch the win for the Maccabees on two separate occasions. Senior
Joshua Polster and sophomore
Benjamin Rozsa Groo each earned a win against Rutgers and Lafayette.
The epee team's third victory was a decisive 7-2 score over Rowan. Averch and Rozsa Groo each went 3-0, while Polster added a victory of his own.
Against Cornell, Averch took two out of three epee duels, while Polster and sophomore
William Lerer each won a battle.
Against Drew, Averch once again went 2-1. Polster and Rozsa Groo each chipped in with a victory using the epee weapon.
Junior
Edward Shindleman had a strong afternoon in sabre battles, going 3-0 against Rowan. The Winnipeg native also won a bout against Rutgers, Lafayette, Cornell, and Drew.
In foil, sophomore
Benjamin Bruder and first-year fencer
Alexander Siegman each earned a win over Rowan.
For the afternoon, Rosza Groo went 6-5 in epee combat.
Yeshiva will be back in action on Sunday, January 30, for the Eric Sollee Massachusetts Institute of Technology Invitational.
