MADISON, N.J. – The Yeshiva University men's fencing competed in the second session of the Rangers Fall Invitational, at the Simon Forum, on Sunday afternoon. Yeshiva earned a victory over the University of Florida, 15-12.
Leading the way for the Blue and White was
Zaelig Averch who went 15-3 in epee combat.
Joshua Polster won 11 battles of his own. Both fencers led the Macs to a 4-2 record in epee duels during the afternoon.
"Our guys were absolutely on fire today," Averch said. "And taking home our first win of the season goes to show that hard work is paying off."
In the Maccabees' victory over the Gators, the epee team came out on top, 6-3. Averch and Polster each went 3-0. The sabre team earned a tight victory by a score of 5-4.
Edward Shindleman won all three of his sabre bouts, while
Brian Lerman claimed two out of three. In foil,
Alexander Siegman took two out of three duels, while
Brian Bendel also went 2-1.
Yeshiva's epee team also defeated Clemson University, 6-3. Averch went a perfect three-for-three, while Polster added a pair of victories.
William Lerer added an epee win of his own. In foil, Siegman won two out of three battles. Bendel won a bout. Shindleman went 2-1 in sabre competition, while Lerman notched a victory.
In the battle against Denison, the epee team won by a score of 7-2. Averch and Polster combined to go 6-0, while Lerer added an epee victory. Bendel took two out of three foil duels, while Shindleman won a sabre battle.
Against Army, the epee team earned a narrow 5-4 win. Averch won all three of his bouts, including the tiebreaking duel that clinched the victory for his squad. Polster went 2-1.
In the battle with Drew, Averch took two out of three epee battles, while Polster added a victory of his own. Bendel claimed a victory with the foil weapon. Averch also clinched a victory against Princeton.
Yeshiva will compete in the Vassar Invitational, at the Walker Field House, on Sunday at 10:00 a.m.
