Women's Volleyball Earns Convincing Victory Over York N.Y. on Senior Night

NEW YORK – The Yeshiva University women's volleyball team celebrated its Senior Night with a statement victory over York College N.Y., in straight sets, at ARC Arena on Thursday evening. Set scores were 25-8, 25-10, and 25-20.

Leading the way for the Maccabees (2-15) was senior Emily Zrihen who tallied eight kills, scored four service aces, and added a dig. Rookie sensation Shany Elmaleh slammed home seven kills, had just as many digs, and added two aces. Juniors Ashley Botnick and Zoey Botnick each anchored the defense with 12 digs, with the former nailing three kills with four service aces, and the latter generating 12 assists and three service aces. Senior Devorah Batt had a solid match with four kills, one service ace, one dig, and one assist. Classmate Tali Miller produced seven assists and eight digs.

In the opening set, Yeshiva scored 10 straight points, highlighted by three kills from Zrihen and just as many service aces from Ashley Botnick, to give the Blue and White a commanding 11-2 hold. After York (0-17) scored the next point, Yeshiva continued its surge with a 7-1 blitz, including three aces from Zrihen and a pair of kills from Elmaleh, to inflate Yeshiva's cushion to 18-4. With the Macs up, 23-8, they finished strong as a kill by Ashley Botnick and then an ace from Zoey Botnick clinched the first-set victory for YU, 25-8.

The early stages of the second set were close, but then the Maccabees went on a 9-1 run to go up, 16-7. After the Cardinals scored the next two points, the Maccabees once again finished the stanza strong by scoring nine of the set's final 10 points to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match and put York on the brink.

In the third set, the Cardinals jumped out to a 13-12 lead. Yeshiva countered with a 7-1 rally, highlighted by a kill and an ace from Ashley Botnick, to take a 19-14 advantage. Later in the frame, back-to-back kills by Batt sparked four straight points by the Macs to give them a match-point opportunity at 24-17. York temporarily staved off defeat by scoring the next three points, but Elmaleh broke through with a kill to clinch the sweep for the Maccabees.

"The players were amazing," Yeshiva University Head Coach Dennis Mente said. "They wanted to finish the season strong."

It was Senior Night and YU graduating seniors Sara Chemel, Daniella Rothman, Gabrielle Kupferman, Batt, Miller, and Zrihen were honored with a ceremony prior to the start of the match.

Yeshiva will conclude the 2022 season on Sunday against King's College N.Y. First serve at All Season Sports Academy is scheduled for 12:45 p.m.
