NEW YORK – The Skyline Conference released the 2022-23 men's basketball preseason coaches' poll on Monday. The defending two-time Skyline Conference Champion Yeshiva University men's basketball program is projected to finish fourth overall in the conference standings, and second in the league's South Division. The full preseason rankings can be seen
here.
Yeshiva will have a young and talented squad compete this season as 10 of the 17 players on the roster are rookies, highlighted by
Zevi Samet. Another newcomer will be
Max Zakheim, who played for NCAA Division I's Bryant University last season. They will look to take over the team's success for key departures such as
Ryan Turell and
Gabriel Leifer, the former who is now playing for the Motor City Cruise in the NBA G League.
The Maccabees return six players from last year's squad that won its second straight Skyline Conference Championship and earned a No. 1 national ranking in the D3hoops.com Men's Top 25 Poll. The returners include team captains
Matan Zucker and
Adi Markovich. Zucker was named Most Outstanding Player of the Skyline Conference Championship game last year. Also returning to the team this year are seniors
Ryan Bokor,
Gabriel Landau, and
Zachary Muller, as well as junior
Oren Betesh.
Yeshiva University Head Coach
Elliot Steinmetz will return for his ninth season at the helm, producing a collegiate head coaching record of 142-57. During his time at YU, he has led the Maccabees to three Skyline Conference Championships, two victories in the 2019-20 NCAA Tournament, a 50-game winning streak spanning from 2019 until 2021, and a No. 1 ranking in the D3hoops.com Men's National Poll. Steinmetz has earned several local, regional, and national accolades including the D3hoops.com NCAA Division III Coach of the Year honors and being the recipient of the Glenn Robinson National Coach of the Year Award, both in 2020.
Steinmetz will once again be assisted by
Joseph Schwartz,
Eli Katz,
Michael Sweetney,
Daniel Katz, and
Yoni Cohen.

Yeshiva will have a very challenging 2022-23 schedule. It begins right off the bat this week in the season opener at nationally ranked No. 13 University of Saint Joseph, at the O'Connell Center, on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. Last year, No. 24 Yeshiva knocked off No. 5 University of Saint Joseph, 87-76, at Max Stern Athletic Center, back on February 17. It was the first time in history that Yeshiva defeated a nationally ranked opponent.
There will be live streaming video of the season-opening contest between the Maccabees and Blue Jays, which can be accessed
