HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Yeshiva University men's fencing team competed in the MACFA Group "B" vs. "C" event, on the campus of Stevens Institute of Technology, on Sunday morning. Yeshiva and Hunter ended up in a tie by a score of 13-13. YU dropped team duels to the United States Naval Academy (14-13), College of William & Mary (17-10), Haverford College (21-6), and Johns Hopkins University (22-5).
Yeshiva's epee team earned three victories during the afternoon and were led by senior
Zaelig Averch who won 13 out of 15 epee battles during the day. Classmate
Joshua Polster had an impressive record of 12-3 at the meet.
The YU sabre team won a tight battle over Hunter College, 5-3. Junior
Edward Shindleman won two bouts, while classmate
Brian Lerman earned a victory of his own. In epee, Averch and Polster each won two out of three duels. Junior
Brian Bendel went 2-1 using the foil weapon, while sophomore
Benjamin Bruder and freshman
Alexander Siegman each won a foil battle.
The Macs' epee team earned a convincing victory over Navy, 7-2. Averch and Polster each went 3-0, while sophomore
William Lerer notched an epee win of his own. Bendel and Siegman each went 2-1 in foil competition. In sabre, Shindleman won two out of three battles.
The YU epee squad once again earned a dominating victory, this time over William & Mary by a score of 7-2. Averch and Polster once again won all three bouts each, while Lerer was victorious in one epee battle. Shindleman won two out of three sabre bouts, while Siegman picked up YU's sole foil win.
Averch led the epee team to the 5-4 win over Johns Hopkins by winning all three bouts, including the rubber battle to break the 4-4 tie. Polster took two out of three in epee combat against the Blue Jays.
Against Haverford, Averch and Polster each went 2-1 in epee duels. Siegman and Bendel both picked up a foil victory.
Yeshiva will compete in the MACFA Championships on Sunday, March 6, on the campus of Drew University.
