The Maccabees (23-3) are coming off a convincing victory in the Skyline Quarterfinals over sixth-seeded Purchase College, 101-66, at Max Stern Athletic Center this past Tuesday evening. That same night, the Dolphins (10-14) earned a thrilling upset victory on the road, in overtime, over the second-seeded Mariners of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy by a score of 87-76.
YU won both head-to-head matchups over Mount Saint Vincent during the regular season, one on each team's home court.
Yeshiva was ranked No. 1 in the country during the year, while riding a 50-game winning streak. The Maccabees won 22 out of 25 games during the regular season, including an impressive win over nationally ranked, and previously undefeated, No. 5 University of Saint Joseph, 87-76, at Max Stern Athletic Center on February 17.
Leading the way for the Maccabees has been seniorÂ
Ryan Turell who leads all three NCAA Divisions with 27.2 points per game in 2021-22. He is No. 1 on Yeshiva's All-Time Scoring List with 2,080 career points. He set the school's single-season scoring record with 51 points during the Macs' Skyline win over Manhattanville College, back on November 28. He also has 708 points this year, the most of any YU player all-time in a season.
Graduate studentÂ
Gabriel Leifer has impacted the Maccabees by securing nine double-doubles, including three triple-doubles, during the season. He has scored 1,599 points and dished out a Yeshiva all-time best 636 assists during his illustrious career. During the Maccabees' conference quarterfinal win over the Panthers, Leifer surpassed Yeshiva University Athletics Hall of Famer David Kufeld ('80) for No. 1 on YU's All-Time Career Rebounding List. Leifer now has 1,225 rebounds during his time at Yeshiva. Kufeld snatched 1,222 boards during his legendary career.
For Mount Saint Vincent, junior Dan Porcic is averaging 18.9 points and 5.9 rebounds per game this season. He scored 38 points during CMSV's win at Purchase College, back on February 1. Porcic netted 24 points to help lead his team to the overtime victory in the Skyline Quarterfinals over Merchant Marine. Classmate Aaron Darab is netting 9.6 points per contest in 2021-22.
