HOBOKEN, N.J. – The Yeshiva University men's fencing team competed in the MACFA Group "B" Round Robin event, at Canavan Arena on Sunday afternoon. Yeshiva dropped its team duels to New Jersey Institute of Technology (25-2), Army (14-13), and the host school, Stevens Institute of Technology (22-5).
The Maccabees' epee team defeated Army by a score of 7-2. Senior
Zaelig Averch won all three bouts, while classmate
Joshua Polster and sophomore
William Lerer each went 2-1 against West Point. In foil, junior
Brian Bendel won two out of three battles, while sophomore
Benjamin Bruder tallied a victory of his own. Junior
Edward Shindleman took two out of three sabre bouts and junior
Brian Lerman notched a sabre win.
Averch and Polster each went 2-1 in epee battles against Stevens, but it was not enough as the Ducks' epee squad edged the Maccabees by a score of 5-4. Lerman got the lone sabre win for YU.
In the final team duel of the afternoon, Averch and Polster each added a victory using the epee weapon against NJIT.
For the afternoon, Averch won six out of nine duels, while Polster went 5-4.
Yeshiva will return to Canavan Arena on Sunday, February 13, for the MACFA Group "B" vs. C" event. The meet is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.
