Softball Earns Two Victories Over York College N.Y.

BRONX – The Yeshiva University softball team had a triumphant afternoon on Sunday, earning a pair of victories over York College N.Y. by scores of 26-13 and 30-17, at Bahoshy Field.

"I am extremely proud of the ladies on our team," Yeshiva University Head Coach Matthew Kaldon said. "They have worked hard getting ready for this season and it showed today. Coming from behind in game two shows the no quit mentality they possess. We have more work to do but today we showed what Yeshiva softball is capable of."

Yeshiva (2-4) came flying out of the gate in game one by scoring six runs in the opening inning. The highlight of the frame was an RBI single down the left-field line off the bat of junior shortstop Kyra Appel.

After York (0-2) scored two runs in the top of the second, Yeshiva tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the third to take a 9-2 hold. The big blow came from rookie infielder Tiferet Weissman as she drilled an RBI double that scored senior shortstop Esther Miller.

The Cardinals rallied with five runs in the top of the fourth to pull to within two. However, Yeshiva's lineup exploded with 17 runs in the bottom frame. Five of those runs came off bases-loaded walks. Senior catcher Chana Fischer came through with a two-run single, while Appel produced an RBI base hit in the next at bat, to make it 26-7 in favor of YU.

York added six runs in the top of the fifth,  but it would not be enough as the Maccabees recorded the final out to earn their first win of the season, 26-13.

At the plate, Appel went 3-for-5 with a triple, three runs scored, and just as many RBI. Senior pitcher Alexis Leibowitz went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in, stole a pair of bases, and drew a walk with the bases loaded. Senior left fielder Kayla Cagan scored three runs, drew two walks, including a bases-loaded walk for an RBI, and stole a base. Esther Miller reached base with a single, scored three runs, and drew two walks. Fischer crossed home plate three times, drew two walks, including an RBI walk with the bases loaded, and produced three runs batted in.

Senior first base player Elisheva Miller drew two walks, scored twice, and had an RBI. First-year infielder Chana Karasik drew three walks, including one for an RBI, and scored three runs. Weissman scored three runs, drew two walks, and had two runs batted in. Second-year center fielder Tova Hakakian drove in two runs, including a bases-loaded free pass. Senior right fielder Daniella Rothman and first-year infielder Rebecca Kalmar each scored a run with the latter drawing a walk.

In the circle, Leibowitz struck out seven batters and gave up just one earned run to earn the complete-game victory.

In game two, the Macs overcame three different multi-run deficits, including an eight-run hole heading to the bottom of the third.

After York scored three runs in the top of the first, Yeshiva countered with five runs in the bottom frame, sparked by a bases-loaded walk by Appel, to take a 5-3 benefit. The Cardinals scored four times in the top of the second to regain the advantage, 7-5. Yeshiva answered with two more runs in the home half of the second, capped off by a bases-loaded walk courtesy of Kalmar, to even the game at seven.

York had a big top of the third by scoring eight runs to take a commanding 15-7 benefit. The Maccabees chipped away with five runs in the next frame, highlighted by an RBI walk with the bases loaded by Karasik and an RBI single off the bat of Rothman, to narrow the deficit to 15-12.

After giving two runs  in the top of the fourth to fall behind, 17-12, Yeshiva's lineup broke through with 18 runs in the bottom frame. Appel drilled an RBI triple that scored Fischer and then ended up scoring herself on a throwing error to narrow YU's deficit to 17-14. Later in the frame, Cagan drove in two runs on a single to tie the game at 17. Rothman ended up scoring what would be the official game-winning run that made it 18-17 in favor of the Maccabees. Yeshiva scored 12 more times in the inning and then Leibowitz shut the door in the top of the fifth to secure the come-for-behind win for the Maccabees and the sweep.

In the circle, Leibowitz struck out five more batters in game two to snatch her second complete-game victory of the afternoon.

At the plate, Appel went 3-for-4 with five runs scored, five runs batted in, and a pair of walks. Leibowitz scored four runs, produced a single, and drew two walks. Fischer scored five runs, had two singles, a walk, and a stolen base. Cagan crossed home plate five times, produced two singles, drove in two runs, had a walk, and stole a base. Rookie right fielder Naomi Klinghoffer drew three walks, drove in two runs, hit a single, and scored a run. Hakakian had a solid game with three runs scored, produced a RBI single, drove in two runs total, had just as many walks, and stole a base.

Kalmar drew four walks, scored twice, and drove in just as many runs. Karasik had two runs batted in during the contest. Rothman scored three runs and earned a walk. Weissman generated two runs scored and a base on balls.

Yeshiva will return to Bahoshy Field on Tuesday, for a non-conference doubleheader against Lehman College, beginning at 5:30 p.m.
