Yeshiva rallies for 14-13 win over Hunter College in Mens Fencing

(New York, NY) - Sophomore Morgan Barany (Hollywood, FL/Hillel) and senior Perry Fox (Elizabeth, NJ/KYHS) won all three of their bouts, and the YU Sabre Squad went 7-2 during their competition to lead the Yeshiva University Men's Fencing team on a furious rally as they defeated Hunter College, 14-13 on Tuesday at Hunter. With the win, Yeshiva is now 3-5 for the 2007-08 season.

Hunter (1-4) took an early lead as they won the Epee competition, 5-4, but the effort was a terrific one for Yeshiva as Fox swept his three matches, winning 5-3, 5-3, and 5-4. YU also received a victorious effort from sophomore Jonathan Adler (Toronto, Canada/CHAT), who won 5-3 during the third round of competition.

During Foil, it appeared as if Hunter took control of the match for good as the Hawks won 6-3 to take an 11-7 overall lead. For Yeshiva, sophomore Justin Shemesh (Staten Island, NY/Yeshiva Flatbush) won two out of three bouts, and sophomore Michael Hershkop (Ontario, Canada/Yeshivay or Chaim) picked up a win as well. However, the effort put Hunter in a position where three wins at Sabre would give the Hawks the match.

The three wins did not happen for Hunter as Barany opened Sabre with a 5-2 win, and was followed by 5-2 and 5-3 wins for junior Jason Wininger (East Brunswick, NJ/Hun School) and sophomore Adam James Friedman (Ellington, CT/Ellington HS). The second round saw Yeshiva pull even closer to victory when Barany and Wininger scored 5-2 and 5-1 wins - respectively - to even the match at 12. That made the third round of Sabre a two-out-of-three bout competition to determine which team would score the victory. The win went to Yeshiva as Friedman scored a 5-2 win and Barany won 5-1 to clinch the match for the Maccabees.

Up next for Yeshiva is their final competition of 2007, a trip to the Sacred Heart University Invitational in Fairfield, Connecticut on Sunday, Dec. 9 at 10:00 a.m.
