Women’s Basketball Grabs First Win with 74-41 Victory Over New Rochelle

Varnai was 1 point shy (27) of a career high

NEW YORK, NY – The women's basketball team earned their first win of the season by defeating the visiting Angels of New Rochelle 74-41 at Baruch College last night.  The Maccabees improved to 1-2 (1-1 HVWAC) while the Angels fell to 1-2 (0-1) overall.

 

Avigail Varnai came one point shy of a career high with 27 in last nights game.  She led all scorers, while connecting on 9-17 from the field (3-6 from 3-pt. range).  Varnai also pulled down 6 rebounds, made 6 assists, and got 6 steals.  More impressively, the 5-2 point guard had 2 blocks, all in 32 minutes played.

 

Shir Fuchs followed with 18 points on 6-12 shooting, and was near perfect from the line (5-6).  Lauren Kempin pulled down a team high 9 rebounds.  The Maccabees shot 42% from the field for the game, while holding their opponent to 25%.  Yeshiva shot 36% from behind the arc and 69% from the line. 

 

The Macs started the game with a 15-0 run, then extended their lead to 22-2 before New Rochelle was able to get anything going.  The first half ended with Yeshiva up big, 36-15.

 

New Rochelle cut the deficit to 15 in the early stages of the second half, but the Yeshiva defense would allow them no closer.  They extended their lead to as much as 35 in the second half, and ended with the 33 point win. 

 

The Maccabees will travel to NYU-Poly on Sunday for a 2PM game against the Skyline opponent.
