NEW YORK, NY – The women's basketball team was part of a field of 4 at this weekend's Dr. Betty Shabazz Basketball Tournament hosted by Medgar Evers. Yeshiva lost the opening game to the host school 74-57, but then won the consolation game over New Rochelle 76-52. The split weekend left Yeshiva at 2-7 overall.
In the opening game, the Maccabees were unable to grab a lead at any point in the game, despite three players ending in double figures. Shir Fuchs led the offensive attack with 23 points, followed by Avigail Varnai with 12 and Lauren Kempin with 10. Kempin finished one rebound shy (9) of a double-double.
In the consolation matchup against New Rochelle, the Maccabees took an early lead and never gave it back. They played the entire game with the lead, although New Rochelle was able to cut a 10 point first-half deficit to 5 at the half. New Rochelle pulled as close as two in the opening minutes of the second half, but Yeshiva began a big run that put the game out of reach.
Lauren Kempin had one of her best games as a Maccabee, coming up 1 block short of a triple-double. She had 23 points on 8-11 shooting, 18 rebounds, and 9 blocks. Jaclyn Ramras also had a double-double, with 22 points and 11 rebounds (7 on the offensive side). Shir Fuchs scored 16 and Avigail Varnai had 13 to round out the double digit scorers.
After playing 4 games during the week, the Maccabees have a much lighter schedule this week. They will host Farmingdale State on Wednesday evening at the High School for Girls in Queens, NY. The game will begin at 8PM. That will be their only game until the following Monday.
