(Bronx, NY) – Junior Zachary Weiner (Sharon, MA/Maimonides) pitched four outstanding innings during the opener, and senior Max Gornish (St. Louis, MO/Block Yeshiva) went 2 for 2 in the nightcap, but the Yeshiva University Baseball team fell to 0-4 with losses to Farmingdale State during both ends of a doubleheader on Sunday March 15. The Maccabees lost the opener 16-5, and the nightcap 13-2, and are now 0-2 in Skyline Conference play.
The opener saw Farmingdale score the game's first 15 runs with the benefit of two seven-run innings. The Maccabees rallied for three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as Gornish drove in a run with a walk, junior Avraham Pinsky (Valley Village, CA/YULA) followed up with an RBI single, and junior Binyamin Cooper (Teaneck, NJ/YUHS) also drove in a run. Yeshiva also scored runs in the seventh and eighth innings as junior Aaron Korda (Los Angeles, CA/YULA) doubled home a run, and junior Yonathon Raab (Maale Adumim, Israel/Bet-El) singled home a run.
The story for YU was the performance of Weiner on the mound. Entering the game in the sixth inning, Weiner allowed two earned runs and held the powerful Farmingdale State bats mainly at bay for much of his performance. Overall, Yeshiva was out-hit 21-6 and the Maccabees combined for five errors.
The nightcap saw Yeshiva battle for the first three innings as junior Benjamin Susswein (Yonkers, NY/MTA) struck out three Farmingdale batters during the first three innings, and a Gornish single in the first inning and Seth Fein (Woodmere, NY/Hebrew Academy of Long Beach) sacrifice fly in the second made it a 4-2 Farmingdale lead, heading into the fourth inning. However, the Rams rallied for two runs in the fourth inning, three in the fifth, and four in the sixth inning to blow the game wide open.
The Maccabees were out-hit 16-4 during the second game but committed only two errors. YU was also 5 for 6 in stolen bases.
Yeshiva received an outstanding effort during the second game by sophomore Daniel Wizenfield (Los Angeles, CA/YULA), who pitched the seventh inning and struck out the side.
YU returns to action on Wednesday, March 18 when the Maccabees host Old Westbury for an 8:00 p.m. Skyline Conference game.
