(Purchase, NY) – Senior Max Gornish (St. Louis, MO/Block Yeshiva) drove in four runs, and junior Zachary Weiner (Sharon, MA/Maimonides) went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and three runs scored as the Yeshiva University Baseball team split a doubleheader with St. Joseph's (Brooklyn), losing the opener 13-2 before winning the nightcap 12-7. With the split, YU is now 2-14 overall.
After the opener proved to be a big day for St. Joseph's, the nightcap became a battle as the visiting Bears opened up leads of 4-0 and 5-2 before a two-run bottom of the fourth inning - highlighted by RBI's from Howard Avner (Northbrook, IL/Fasman Yeshiva) and Seth Fein (Woodmere, NY/Hebrew Academy of Long Beach) - made it 5-4.
The bottom of the fifth inning proved to be historical for YU as the Maccabees rallied for a school-record eight runs to blow the game wide open. A two-RBI single by Weiner and a three-RBI triple by Gornish proved to be decisive blows for the Maccabees. Gornish had two hits during the inning for YU.
St. Joseph's rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh inning, but the pitching combination of Benjamin Susswein (Yonkers, NY/MTA) and Joshua Pransky (Philadelphia, PA/Beren) closed the door for Yeshiva's second win of the season - tying the school record for wins in a season.
Yeshiva had 10 hits, compared to four for St. Joseph's and the Maccabee pitching combination allowed a combined five earned runs.
Yeshiva returns to action on Thursday, April 23 when YU travels to Polytechnic for a 3:00 p.m. game.
