Baseball loses twice to Maritime College in Friday doubleheader

(Bronx, NY) – Senior Max Gornish (St. Louis, MO/Block Yeshiva), sophomore Jeremy Schwartz (Brooklyn, NY/MTA), and junior Avraham Pinsky (Valley Village, CA/YULA) each had two hits, with Pinsky driving in two runs and Gornish scoring twice, but the Yeshiva University Baseball team saw its two-game losing streak snapped, 9-5 by Maritime College during the first half of a Friday morning doubleheader at Maritime College. After losing the second game 14-3, YU is now 3-16 overall and 1-13 in Skyline Conference play.

Maritime started the opener by scoring eight runs during the first two innings to grab a seemingly insurmountable lead, but the Maccabees did not go down without a fight. YU scored four runs in the sixth inning to make things interesting as a Pinsky single scored two runs and two bases-loaded walks gave YU four runs in the inning and made it 8-4.

After Maritime scored once in the bottom of the frame to make it 9-4, Gornish opened the top of the seventh inning with a double, and a Schwartz single brought him home to make it 9-5, but despite having two runners on base, YU could not close the gap any further.

Overall, Maritime outhit YU 10-9, both teams made two errors apiece, and junior Howard Avner (Northbrook, IL/Fasman Yeshiva) gave the Maccabees a solid effort on the mound, pitching a complete game, allowing six earned runs, and striking out two.

Yeshiva returns to action on Sunday when they travel to Long Island for two Skyline Conference games. The Maccabees face St. Joseph's (LI) at 12:00 p.m., and then travel to Old Westbury for a 5:00 p.m. game.
