(Patchogue, NY) – Junior Martin Leibovich (Buenos Aires, Argentina/ORT II) scored 13 points and YU hit a season-high 10 three-pointers, but the Yeshiva University Men's Basketball lost its third straight game, 76-54 to St. Joseph's on Sunday afternoon at St. Joseph's. With the loss, Yeshiva is now 4-4 overall and 2-3 in Skyline Conference play.
The first 13 minutes were a back and forth battle as neither team was able to gain command of the game during the stretch, and a Leibovich jump-shot with just over 13 minutes left in the opening stanza made it a 24-19 lead for St. Joseph's. However, from there, the host Golden Eagles went on a 16-2 run over a 12:15 span to make it 40-21. A Benjamin Lockspeiser (Highland Park, NJ/MAYHS) three-pointer during the closing seconds of the opening half brought the game to a 16-point deficit at the break.
The second half saw much of the same as St. Joseph's extended the lead to 32 points with 4:34 remaining in the game. However, Yeshiva did not give up. The Maccabees scored the final 10 points of the game to bring the final to a 22-point deficit.
Leibovich was the only Maccabee to reach double figures in scoring, but Yeshiva did have a bright spot in that the Maccabees converted a season-high 10 three-point shots (on 19 attempts), and 10 Maccabees scored points overall. Also having a good night for YU was freshman Chen Biron (Kfar Saba, Israel/Katzanelson) who scored nine points after coverting three out of five three-point shots.
Overall, YU was outshot 43%-42% and outrebounded 37-27. The Maccabees were hurt by 21 turnovers while St. Joseph's committed only six.
Yeshiva returns to action on Thursday, Dec. 11 whem the Maccabees travel to Baruch College for an 8:00 p.m. non-conference game.
