(New York, NY) – Junior Martin Leibovich (Buenos Aires, Argentina/ORT II) had team-highs in points (23), rebounds (six), and assists (three), and sophomore Simon Brookim (Brentwood, CA/Valley Torah) chipped in 16 points, but the Yeshiva University Men's Basketball lost its fourth straight game, 73-63 to Baruch College on Thursday night at Baruch. With the loss, Yeshiva is now 4-5 overall.
As has been the case for much of Yeshiva's losing streak, the Maccabees hung tough early against a solid opponent, only to see things fall apart a bit during the final minutes of the first half. A Brookim lay-up with 5:29 to play in the opening stanza brought Yeshiva within five as they trailed 18-13, but from there, Baruch dominated the remainder of the first half. The Bearcats scored 13 of the final 17 points to take a 31-17 into halftime as Baruch shot 50% during the first half, and forced 11 Yeshiva turnovers while committing only three.
A Baruch lay-up with 15:54 remaining in the game put the Bearcats ahead by a game-high 24 points, but from there Yeshiva turned things around. A 10-4 Maccabee run made it 50-34 with just over 13 minutes remaining in the game. Later, a 9-2 YU run that culminated with a Daniel Somech (Jerusalem, Israel/Masorti Jerusalem) three-pointer made it 56-43 with 8:22 remaining. The Maccabees then finished the game on a 7-1 run for the 10-point final deficit.
The Maccabees shot 46% during the second half and committed only six turnovers during the stretch.
Yeshiva returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 13 when they host Maritime College for an 8:30 p.m. Skyline Conference game.
