(New York, NY) – Junior Martin Leibovich (Buenos Aries, Argentina/ORT II) scored 16 points on 7 for 12 shooting, and sophomore Simon Brookim (Brentwood, CA/Valley Torah) added 11 points but the Yeshiva University Men's Basketball team suffered a 73-53 set-back to Mount Saint Vincent on Thursday night at the Max Stern Athletics Center. With the loss, YU is now 5-6 overall and 3-4 in Skyline Conference play.
Mount Saint Vincent scored the game's first 11 points and led by as many as 13 points midway through the first half before Yeshiva battled back to make things interesting. The Dolphins led 26-19 at halftime, and when junior Alex Claster (Kansas City, Kansas/Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy) hit a three-pointer to open the second half, YU trailed 26-22. After Mount Saint Vincent extended the lead to double digits once again, the Maccabees battled back to bring the game within six points as a Leibovich jump-shot with 14:26 remaining in the game made it 32-26. However, from there, Mount Saint Vincent went on a 20-6 run to make it 52-35 with just over six minutes remaining in the game, and all but put the game away.
Both teams shot well with Mount Saint Vincent converting 42% of their shots, including 56% during the second half, while Yeshiva shot 43% and 52% during the second half. However, the Maccabees were outrebounded 37-28 and committed 20 turnovers, compared to Mount Saint Vincent's 12 turnovers. Mount Saint Vincent also went 15 for 18 from the free throw line, while Yeshiva converted five out of eight free throw attempts.
Three Maccabees grabbed five rebounds apiece, and junior Marc Ladenheim (Bala Cynwd, PA/Stern Hebrew) went 4 for 4 from the floor, and scored eight points.
Yeshiva will now enter its holiday break and will return to action on Tuesday, Jan. 20 when the Maccabees host Farmingdale State for an 8:00 p.m. Skyline Conference game.
