Yeshiva drops 78-63 loss to Farmingdale State despite Leibovich's double-double

(New York, NY) – Junior Martin Leibovich (Buenos Aries, Argentina/ORT II) recorded his fourth career double-double, scoring 21 points while grabbing 10 rebounds, and sophomore Simon Brookim (Brentwood, CA/Valley Torah) added 12 points but the Yeshiva University Men's Basketball team battled but fell 78-63 to Skyline Conference powerhouse on Tuessday night at the Max Stern Athletics Center. With the loss, YU is now 5-7 overall and 3-5 in Skyline Conference play.

Playing without two starters who missed the game with injuries, Yeshiva was no easy task for the top team in the Skyline Conference as the Maccabees led for much of the first half, and despite several Farmingdale attempts to pull away, when junior Aryeh Magilnick (Santa Monica, CA/YULA) hit a pair of free throws with 5:18 remaining in the first half, the game was tied at 18. However, the visiting Rams scored 15 of the final 21 points of the opening stanza to take a 33-24 lead into the break.

Consecutive baskets by Leibovich and Brookim to open the second half made it a 33-28 game, but seven straight Farmingdale points put the Rams ahead by double figures, and Farmingdale never looked back ... but it certainly wasn't easy. A 19-2 Ram run made it a 61-37 game with 9:08 to play, and Farmingdale led by as many as 25 points, but an 11-1 YU run made it a 66-51 game with 4:35 remaining in the game. However, Yeshiva simply ran out of time and the Maccabees were unable to complete the comeback.

Leibovich was the story for Yeshiva, converting seven of his 15 free throw attempts, and adding three assists, three blocked shots and two steals. Brookim was outstanding once again, adding five rebounds, three assists, and three blocked shots to his 12 points. Overall, Yeshiva was outshot 50%-43% and was only outrebounded 39-34 despite a major height disparity. However, turnovers proved to be the downfall for YU as the Maccabees turned the ball over 19 times, while Farmingdale committed only 11 turnovers.

Yeshiva returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 22 when they travel to Mount Saint Mary for a crucial 8:00 p.m. Skyline Conference contest.
