(New York, NY) – Junior Jeremy Pressman (Bala Cynwd, PA/Stern Hebrew) scored a career-high 14 points - on 7 for 10 shooting - and added five rebounds, and sophomore Simon Brookim (Brentwood, CA/Valley Torah) and junior Martin Leibovich (Buenos Aires, Argentina/ORT II) combined for 26 points, but the Yeshiva University Men's Basketball team lost a 65-61 heartbreaker to Mount Saint Mary on Wednesday night at the Max Stern Athletic Center. With the loss, Yeshiva is now 7-16 overall and 5-12 in Skyline Conference play.
On Senior Night for Yeshiva University, YU trailed by as many as 10 points during the first half, and ultimately trailed 37-29 at halftime. However, the Maccabees opened the second half on a 14-2 run, and when Leibovich hit a jump shot with 13:18 remaining in the game, Yeshiva led 43-39.
The rest of the game proved to be a thriller as neither team led by more than three points down the stretch, and a Leibovich free throw with 1:28 remaining made it a one-point game as Yeshiva trailed 62-61. However, that was as close as Yeshiva would get as the Maccabees missed their final four shots, and Mount Saint Mary did not miss a free throw during the final minute, holding on for the four-point win.
Brookim finished the game with 12 points, seven rebounds, and five steals, while Leibovich had 16 points, nine rebounds, five assists, and four steals. Overall, both teams shot 44%, but a 41-31 rebounding edge by Mount Saint Mary proved to make a huge difference.
The Maccabees close the 2008-09 season on Sunday, Feb. 22 when they travel to Bard College for a 4:00 p.m. Skyline Conference game.
