(Old Westbury, NY) – Sophomore Simon Brookim (Brentwood, CA/Valley Torah) scored a game-high 27 points on 10 for 15 shooting, and junior Martin Leibovich (Buenos Aires, Argentina/ORT II) added 20 points, six rebounds, and six assists, but the Yeshiva University Men's Basketball team lost its fourth straight game, 70-65 to Old Westbury on Wednesday night at Old Westbury. With the loss, Yeshiva is now 6-12 overall and 4-9 in Skyline Conference play
During a game with crucial Skyline Conference post-season implications, Yeshiva tried to pull ahead early. Up 12-10 early in the first half, Leibovich led Yeshiva on a 7-0 run to extend the YU lead to a game-high nine points. However, from there, Old Westbury chipped into the Yeshiva lead. A three-pointer with 5:23 remaining in the first half gave the Panthers a 25-24 lead, and after the Maccabees got the lead back, Old Westbury scored the final five points of the first half to take a 34-31 lead into the break.
The second half saw Brookim take over, scoring 18 of his 27 points as the two teams saw six ties and four lead changes during the final 20 minutes. Old Westbury took the lead for good with 9:09 remaining in the game, and led by as many as six points until a Brookim three-pointer made it 63-61 with 2:57 remaining in the game. However, that was as close as Yeshiva would get as Old Westbury grabbed six rebounds during the final two minutes of the game and did not miss a free throw.
Yeshiva was the better shooting team, converting 60% of their field goal attempts, while Old Westbury hit only 44% of their shots. However, Old Westbury held a 27-23 rebounding edge and Yeshiva committed 21 turnovers, compared to Old Westbury's 14.
Yeshiva returns to the court on Saturday night when they travel to Maritime College for an 8:30 p.m. Skyline Conference game.
