(New York, NY) - Sophomore Shir Fuchs (Herzeliya, Israel/Hayovel) scored a team-high 14 points and added five rebounds, and sophomore Renee Ashkenazi (Deal, NJ/Hillel Yeshiva) and junior Lauren Kempin (Fairlawn, NJ/Frisch) enjoyed solid games in the middle, but a tough second half led to the Yeshiva University Women's Basketball team losing its sixth straight game, 88-53 to Old Westbury on Wednesday night at Old Westbury. With the loss, Yeshiva is now 2-16 overall and 0-13 in Skyline Conference play.
Old Westbury opened the game with an 8-0 run, but unlike the Panthers' 88-45 win over YU in December, this game was anything but a laugher. Thanks to six points by Fuchs and a series of defensive stands by YU, the Maccabees battled back to make it 14-12 with 12:52 to play in the first half. Old Westbury stormed back to take a nine-point lead, but Kempin and Ashkenazi ended the first half with a flurry, and a Kempin jumper with 1:38 to play in the first half made it 28-24 for Old Westbury. Yeshiva cut the deficit to as few as three points after a Fuchs three-pointer with 1:04 to play, but the Panthers held a 33-27 lead at halftime.
An early 10-0 run for Old Westbury gave the Panthers a 45-30 lead, and all but put the game away for Old Westbury, and a later 13-2 run gave Old Westbury a 60-36 lead with just over 10 minutes remaining in the game. From there, Old Westbury coasted to the win.
Kempin finished the game with nine points and five rebounds, Ashkenazi added seven points and 10 rebounds, and Elana Kastzl (Miami, FL/WYHS) chipped in eight points.
Overall, Yeshiva shot 26% from the floor, compared to Old Westbury's 40% but the battle on the boards proved to be competitive as Old Westbury outrebounded Yeshiva 53-47. Yeshiva was felled by 35 turnovers, while Old Westbury committed only 20.
Next up for the Maccabees is a visit from Sage College on Sunday, Feb. 8 at 1:00 p.m. The game will be played at Baruch College.
