(New York, NY) - Sophomore Shir Fuchs (Herzeliya, Israel/Hayovel) scored 15 points on 6 for 11 shooting, and sophomore Avigail Varnai (Skokie, IL/ICJA) and junior Jaclyn Ramras (Lawrence, NY/SKA) scored 10 points apiece as the Yeshiva University Women's Basketball team saw its 10-game losing streak snapped with a 74-39 win over the College of New Rochelle on Saturday night at Baruch College. With the win, Yeshiva is now 2-11 overall and 1-2 in Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference (HVWAC) competition.
Up 8-5 early in the first half, the Maccabees went on an incredible 18-1 run that culminated with a Fuchs three-pointer with 9:49 to play in the first half to make it 26-6. Every point during the run would prove to be important as CNR ended the opening stanza by scoring 12 of the final 20 points of the half to make it 34-18 at halftime.
After Yeshiva's Elana Kastzl (Miami, FL/WYHS) opened the second half with a three-pointer to make it 37-18, the visiting Blue Angels made things even more interesting to open the second half as CNR went on a 7-0 run to make it 37-25 with 15:54 to play in the game. CNR continued to battle YU, trailing 41-28 with 13:49 to play when Yeshiva blew the game wide open with a 25-1 run that saw seven different Maccabees score to make it 66-29 with 7:09 to play. From there, YU cruised to victory.
Nine Maccabees scored five points or more as YU shot 43% for the game, including a 47% effort during the second half of play. Yeshiva also enjoyed a 60-40 rebounding edge, with junior Lauren Kempin (Fairlawn, NJ/Frisch) and freshman Daniella Barber (Seattle, WA/Northwest Yeshiva) grabbing eight boards apiece. Varnai also added a team-high nine assists.
Yeshiva returns to action on Sunday, January 25 when the Maccabees travel to Polytechnic for a 1:00 p.m. Skyline Conference game.
