(Brooklyn, NY) - Sophomore Avigail Varnai (Skokie, IL/ICJA) scored nine points and added eight rebounds, and junior Lauren Kempin (Fairlawn, NJ/Frisch) added eight points and four rebounds, but the Yeshiva University Women's Basketball team dropped a 46-41 heartbreaker to Polytechnic Institute of NYU on Sunday afternoon at Polytechnic. With the loss, Yeshiva is now 2-12 overall and 0-10 in Skyline Conference play.
Two months after losing to Polytechnic by 24 points to open the 2008-09 season, Yeshiva fell behind 8-0 six minutes into Sunday's game, but the Maccabees battled back to turn in one of their finest performances of the 2008-09 campaign. Polytechnic led by as many as 12 points, 18-6 with 7:39 to play in the first half, but a late YU rally brought the Maccabees back into the game, and Yeshiva trailed 24-18 at halftime.
The second half saw Polytechnic jump ahead 29-20 with 13:44 to play, but a 10-2 Yeshiva run culminated with a Jaclyn Ramras (Lawrence, NY/SKA) free throw with 9:01 to play to make it a 31-30 Polytechnic lead. However, a 9-2 Polytechnic run gave the Fighting Blue Jays a 40-32 lead with 4:41 to play and all but put the game away. A Kempin jumper with 2:36 left made it 42-38, but Polytechnic made several free throws down the stretch to ice the game.
Yeshiva had the better shooting day, converting 24% of its field goals, while Polytechnic converted 20% of its shots, but the difference came at the free throw line where Polytechnic went 21 for 31 from the line, while YU went 13 for 16. Polytechnic also outrebounded YU 44-37 and forced 21 Yeshiva turnovers while committing 19 turnovers.
All eight Maccabees scored at least two points and grabbed at least two rebounds during the game.
Yeshiva returns to action on Tuesday night when it hosts Purchase College for an 8:00 p.m. Skyline Conference game.
