NEW YORK, NY – The men's basketball team went into the half tied with the host Gators of Sage College, but a 9-33 performance from the field in the second half cost the Macs their 6th win of the season. As it stands, the Macs are 5-7 (4-4), while Sage improved to 3-11 (2-8).
The first half of play was all Yeshiva, as the Macs scored first and were never really pressured again until the final minutes of the half.
Martin Leibovich scored 11 of the team's first 20 points, to help the Macs to a 20-10 lead with 10:43 on the clock. After Martin hit another 3-pointer a few minutes later, the lead was 11, and it looked as if the Maccabees would cruise to a halftime edge. But the Gators fought back from 13 down late in the half, to close with a 15-2 run to tie things up going into the locker room.
Unlike the first half, the Macs found themselves playing catch-up the entire second half. After
Udi Volkov's lay-up 2 minutes in, the Macs surrendered the next 8 points. Leibovich kept the Macs close early, with a three-pointer to cut the deficit to 3, but that would prove to be as close as they could get the rest of the way. The deficit swelled to as much as 17 with under 4 minutes to play, before the Macs ended with a small run that brought the final score to 67-55.
Leibovich led all scorers and rebounders with 25 points and 11 boards. He was the only Maccabee to score more than 5 points, as the remaining 30 points were spread amongst 9 different Maccabee players.
Two home conference contests remain for this week, the first on Thursday against Mount Saint Vincent at 8PM. The second will be Maritime College on Saturday at 8:30PM.
