Leibovich Scores Final 10 Points As Maccabees Hold on For 73-71 win Over MSV

NEW YORK, NY - Martin Leibovich scored Yeshiva's last 10 points, 6 of which came from the free throw line with 2 minutes or less remaining, en-route to his second straight 20+ performance night. As a team, Yeshiva shot an amazing 65% from the field, which helped secure the 73-71 win. The victory moves the Macs to 6-7 (5-4) while dropping the Dolphins to 7-8 (4-7).

Martin Leibovich led all scorers with 22 points, 18 of which came in the second half. Omer Haim followed with 14 and Chen Biron ended with 11. Leibovich also led the team with 7 rebounds and 3 assists. Despite the close score, Yeshiva put up better numbers in shooting percentage, three point percentage (66.7%), free throw percentage (78.9%), total rebounds (32 to 24), blocks (4 to 1), and steals (7 to 2). The close game proved a result of 25 turnovers for the Macs, leading to 27 Dolphin points.

Yeshiva opened the game with an 8-1 run, and didn't miss a shot from the field over the first 7:20 of the game. With a lead as high as 9, it looked as if the Macs would pull away, but turnovers allowed Mount Saint Vincent back into the game, and the Dolphins held a 7 point lead with 5:43 to play. The Macs used 4 of their 6 timeouts in the first half, and found themselves down 34-29 at the half.

The second half was all Yeshiva, as the Maccabees scored the half's first 12 points to regain a 7 point advantage. With 16:45 to play, the Dolphins cut their 8 point deficit to only 1 in a short span, but Omer Haim hit a crucial 3 to keep the Macs in front. Just when it looked like things were in hand, the Dolphins came back and took their first lead of the second half with 6:34 showing on the clock. The teams battled back and forth before Leibovich took over for Yeshiva. With 2:03 showing, he hit two free throws to put Yeshiva up 5. After the Dolphins tied it a minute later, Martin connected with a finger roll in the lane. After collecting a rebound with 20 seconds remaining, Leibovich was put back on the line where he hit 2 more, extending the lead to 4. After a made shot by MSV and a foul by the Macs, Leibovich ripped down the rebound on the missed free throw and calmly hit two more from the line for a 4 point advantage. A made layup by MSV and two missed free throws by the Macs left the game at 73-71 with just under 4 seconds showing. As time expired, the Dolphins missed the last second attempt to tie the game.

The win moved Yeshiva into the 6th place spot in the conference, right in front of MSV who came into the game in 6th. The Dolphins defeated Yeshiva earlier in the season, leaving the season series at 1-1. The final game of this three game week will be Saturday night against Maritime. The game is slated for an 8:30PM tipoff.
