Men’s Basketball Drops Both Games at Ramapo Tip-Off Tournament

Chen Sina
NEW YORK, NY – The men's basketball team was at the Ramapo College Tip-Off tournament for the 5th straight year this past weekend, along with SUNY Maritime and Salve Regina. The Maccabees lost in the opening round to Ramapo 76-54 and then to Maritime in the consolation game 61-59. Ramapo defeated Salve Regina in the championship game 88-68.

Against Ramapo, Yeshiva shot 48% from the field, but only 10% (1-10) from 3-pt. range. The Macs were led by Dovie Hoffman and Mazyar Kashan with 10 points each. Kashan was a perfect 5-5 from the field in only 7 minutes played. Hoffman and Chen Sina led Yeshiva with 6 rebounds apiece. Chen Biron was the only Maccabee to hit from downtown.

In the consolation game against Maritime, the Macs were down only 3 at the half, although they trailed by as many as 7. They briefly held a 26-25 edge late in the half, but Maritime closed with a 4-0 run to take the lead into the break.

A 5-0 to start the second half put Yeshiva in the lead and both teams went back and forth scoring over the next few minutes. Maritime built two separate 5 point leads, only to see Yeshiva come back and take the lead minutes later. After Maritime tied the score at 59 with less than a minute to play, the Maccabees took two timeouts to diagram a play. With 17 seconds to go, Dovie Hoffman missed the go-ahead shot, and Maritime grabbed the rebound. After a timeout of their own, Giovanni Hurley scored the gam winner with 4 seconds showing on the clock.

Hoffman led the scoring once again, with 22 points on 8-18 shooting. He recorded 11 rebounds giving him his second double-double of the season. Omer Haim followed with 13 points and Yoni Eckmann had 11 of his own. Yoni also had 8 rebounds and 7 blocks coming off the bench in 29 minutes.

Yeshiva's record stands at 0-4 for the first time since the 2004-05 season. During that year, the Maccabees won their next 8 games, and finished with a 14-11 overall record. They will look for their first win on Tuesday, when they travel to Bard College for an 8PM game.
