Women’s Basketball Narrowly Misses Entry to Championship Game but Wins Consolation Match Easily at Medgar Evers Tourney

Shir was named the tournament MVP and averaged 27.5 points per game
NEW YORK, NY – The women's basketball team was at the annual Betty Shabazz Memorial Tournament, which is hosted by Medgar Evers, this past weekend. The Lady Macs faced Southern Vermont in the opening game, falling by a single point 66-65 on a last second shot. Yeshiva took care of New Rochelle 66-29 in the consolation game, pushing their record to 1-7 on the season.

Against Southern Vermont, the Lady Macs held a lead for most of the first half by as much as 14. The teams went into the half with Yeshiva leading 34-23.

Yeshiva led in the second half by 12 with just over ten minutes to play. But a scoring drought over the next 6 minutes allowed Southern Vermont to go on a 16-3 run and take the lead for the first time since the early part of the game. The teams battled back and forth the rest of the way, and Southern Vermont held a one point advantage with 25 seconds showing. Haley David scored the go ahead basket with 15 second remaining, forcing a timeout and a last second attempt by the opponent. Southern Vermont connected for the game winner with 4 seconds left sending Yeshiva to the consolation game against New Rochelle.

Shir Fuchs led all scorers with 26 points on 10-17 shooting. Haley David had a season high 19 points. Avigail Varnai recorded 10 assists.

Against New Rochelle in the consolation match, the Lady Macs never trailed. They built a halftime lead of 18 and outscored New Rochelle by 8 in the second to get their first win of the season. Shir Fuchs once again was the leading scorer, dropping 29 points and pulling down 6 rebounds. She also made 7 steals. Lauren Kempin had 12 points and a team high 9 rebounds and 4 blocks. As a team, Yeshiva shot 36% from the field and held New Rochelle to 16%.

Fuchs was named the tournament MVP after averaging 27.5 points and 4 steals. She played 73 total minutes and recorded 8 total rebounds. She was a combined 19-31 from the field and 8-14 from long range.

Yeshiva will be back on the court Thursday for a matchup with Sage College. The home contest at Hunter College will begin at 7PM.
