NEW YORK, NY – The men's basketball team attempted to beat Purchase for the third time this season, but was unable to achieve the feat. The Macs found themselves down 7 at the half but were outscored by 8 in the second stanza as the Panthers went on to win 72-57. Yeshiva ended the season with an overall record of 12-14.
Martin Leibovich scored 18 and had 5 rebounds while shooting 8-13 from the field. He was followed by
Chen Biron who had 14 points, 12 of which were from long range.
Gil Bash came off the bench to add 10 and round out the double digit scorers. Seniors
Aryeh Magilnick and
David Gilboa finished with 3 and 2 points, respectively.
The Panthers jumped out to a 5-0 lead and never looked back, holding the lead the entire game. The Macs pulled to within 1 at the 15 minute mark on a Biron 3-pointer, but they would get no closer. The lead was extended to 10 in the first half before Yeshiva closed with the final 3 points to bring the score to 35-28.
The Panthers led by as much as 20 in the second half, although the Maccabees never gave in. They went on a 12-4 run to cut the lead to 12 with 2:55 to play, but there was just not enough time to get any closer. Purchase held Yeshiva scoreless over the next 2 minutes while pushing their lead to 17.
Dovie Hoffman scored the game's final basket with 59 seconds left.
In the other conference quarterfinal, Maritime defeated Farmingdale to advance to the semifinals at Old Westbury. Purchase will travel to St. Joseph's in the other semifinal. The winners will meet in the Championship game on Saturday at the highest remaining seed.
