NEW YORK, NY – The men's volleyball team captured the 2010 HVMAC Championship with a 3-0 win over Cooper Union in the finals. The team defeated St. Joseph's Brooklyn earlier in the semifinals 3-0 to sweep the tournament in straight sets.
David Kahana was named Tournament MVP and Arnold Ross took home co-Coach of the Year honors.
The Maccabees handled St. Joseph's easily in the semifinal game, winning 3-0 (30-10, 30-13, 30-17).
David Kahana had 19 kills and 14 digs en-route to 20 points and a .400 hitting percentage.
Zanvy Grauman scored 17.5 points on 15 kills, two aces, and a block assist.
Joseph Bajtner assisted 40 kills and had 4 digs. As a team, Yeshiva recorded 52 kills and 16 blocks, to hit a combined .367 for the match.
As their game finished, the second semifinal between Cooper Union and Webb Institute was going into a 4th set. Cooper Union pulled out the 3-1 victory to move into the finals against the Macs.
Yeshiva took the first game 30-17, and the second 30-22, but Cooper Union put up a fight in the third. CU took an 18-15 lead midway through the game, and looked to be building steam in hopes of forcing a 4th game. But Yeshiva picked up their game and outscored Cooper 15-7 down the stretch (30-25) for the straight-set win. Kahana led the team with 16 kills and 11 digs.
Raphael Herskovits had a solid game hitting, as he killed 14 shots in 19 attempted, while only having one error. He also led the team with 2.5 blocked shots.
After the game,
David Kahana was presented with the Tournament MVP trophy. In the two games, David recorded 35 kills, 25 digs, 2 aces, 5 assists, 37 points. Head Coach Arnold Ross was also presented with an award, the co-Coach of the Year. He shared the award with Cooper Union's Head Coach. This is Arnold's first season with the Macs, guiding them to a 14-14 overall record.
Also announced at the tournament was the All-Conference Team. Three Yeshiva players were named to the team.
