Baseball Drops Season Opening Double Header to CCNY

NEW YORK, NY – The baseball team had to wait a few extra days to get their season going after bad weather prevented the season from starting early last week. The team finally made it on the field to open the season Sunday afternoon, however they dropped both games in the double header against CCNY 15-1 and 11-9.

In the opening game, Howard Avner took the mound and pitched 4 innings, giving up 10 runs on 11 hits. He struck out 4 of the 27 batters he faced. As a team, the Maccabees tallied 5 hits, all singles. Seth Fein, Jamie Engelhardt, Aaron Korda, Zachary Weiner, and Drew Feld were the players who singled.

In game two, Yeshiva scored in each of the first 4 innings, but fell two runs shy of a victory. Leading by a 2-1 margin, the Macs gave up 6 runs in the top of the second inning which gave CCNY a 7-4 lead after 2 full innings. However, Yeshiva came back and tied the game at 8 apiece after 4 complete innings. A 3-run 5th inning by CCNY proved to be the difference, as Yeshiva would manage only one more run coming in the bottom of the 7th.

Adam Volk started on the mound and finished with a no-decision, giving up 8 runs (7 earned) on 10 hits while striking out one batter. Zach Weiner came in on relief and gave up 3 runs (1 earned) and was the losing pitcher. Elie Baratz had a perfect game at the plate, batting 3-3 and coming within a homerun of hitting for the cycle. He recorded two RBI. Drew Feld also had a multi-hit game, ending with 2 hits and 2 RBI. Jeremy Schwartz led the Maccabees with 3 runs batted-in.

Yeshiva has some more changes to their schedule, the first being tonight's scheduled double-header at CSI. The game has been split into two single games, with the first being played tomorrow (Tuesday) at 7:30PM and the second being played on Sunday at noon (both at CSI home field). Sunday's DH against St. Joseph's has been moved to the 18th (Thursday) and will begin at 4:30PM. The games are being played at Farmingdale State College.
