NEW YORK, NY - The women's basketball team captured their first win of the season Thursday, with a 53-47 win over the Cougars of Medgar Evers. The Macs (1-0) got double-doubles from
Rebecca Yoshor and
Haley David, while shooting nearly 40% from the field as a team. Medgar Evers dropped to 0-2 on the season.
Rebeca Yoshor led the way with 22 points and 12 rebounds in her first collegiate game. She was 7-15 from the floor, and went to the line 10 times, making 8. She also had 3 steals.
Haley David recorded 16 points and 10 rebounds, including 3-8 from long range. She was the only Maccabee to connect on a deep shot.
Moriah Green led the team with 6 assists, while
Daniella Litwin chipped in 7 points off the bench. Yeshiva's edge in the game came at the foul line, where the Macs were 12-19. Medgar Evers was just 5-13.
Yeshiva never led in the first half, falling down by as many as 9 with less than a minute to go. Yeshiva went into the half trailing by 8, but quickly erased that deficit in the second half by starting on a 8-1 run to cut the lead to 1. Yeshiva's first lead of the game came at the 13:26 mark, after Yoshor connected on a lay-up. At that point, Yeshiva went on an 8-2 run to open a 7 point lead, their highest margin of the game.
The Cougars went on to score the next 7, knotting the game at 44, but Yeshiva did not give up the lead and held Medgar Evers to just 3 points in the final 3 minutes and 20 seconds. Yoshor and Litwin each scored 4 points down the stretch, and David added another, to give Yeshiva the 6 point victory. The Macs ended the final 3:20 on a 9-3 run.
Medgar Evers got 21 points and 11 rebounds out of Chantel Biscette. Tiffany Woodbine scored 17 for the Cougars, who shot 31% from the field. Both teams pulled down 43 rebounds.
The Macs will host Bard College on Tuesday in the first game at home. Tip-off is slated for 8PM at Baruch College.
