NEW YORK, NY – The men's volleyball team was back in the HVMAC Championship game for the second consecutive year, but were unable to repeat as champions as Cooper Union took the game in straight sets. Individual set scores were 25-21, 29-27, 25-15. This was Yeshiva's final match of the season, leaving them at 12-12 on the season.
As the top seed in the conference, Yeshiva rolled through the 4th seeded St. Joseph's Brooklyn in the semifinal game 3-0 (25-15, 25-5, 25-19) to get back into the championship game. Cooper Union did not play in their semifinal game, since 3rd seeded Webb Institute was forced to forfeit. David Wagner led the team against the Bears with 27 assists. Raphael Herskovits recorded a team high 13 kills, followed closely by Naftali Rosenthal with 10 kills.
Against Cooper Union, the Macs played two close sets, but were on the losing end of each. The third set was a struggle for Yeshiva, as Cooper Union dominated the match. Wagner had an impressive 41 assists, and Herskovits had 27 kills, but Yeshiva just could not get any momentum to make a run. Cooper Union made very few mistakes, avenging two regular season losses to the Macs and grabbing the title.
After the championship match, the All-Conference team was announced. Named to the team along with Raphael Herskovits were seniors Samuel Mond and Jack Voystock. This is the first time either of the three student-athletes were named to the HVMAC team. Last week, the Skyline Conference announced Herskovits was named to the second team.
