NEW YORK, N.Y.— The Yeshiva men's basketball team opened its 2013-14 Skyline Conference schedule with a tough loss on Tuesday evening, losing to St. Joseph's-Long Island 68-66 in overtime at a spirited Max Stern Athletic Center.
Yeshiva is now 1-3 (0-1 Skyline) with St. Joseph's-Long Island is now 2-3 (1-0 Skyline).
The Maccabees were led by
Benjy Ritholtz with 28 points on 11-for-21 shooting. He added six rebounds and a pair of blocked shots in the contest. Meanwhile
Shlomo Weissberg had his third double-double of the season with 11 points and a game-high 20 rebounds.
Yisrael Feld added 17 points and five assists for Yeshiva.
St. Joseph's-Long Island was led by Darryl Charles with 23 points, 13 rebounds and six blocked shots.
The game was close throughout with neither team able to take control of the contest. The only double-digit lead by either team in the game came with 3:27 to go before halftime and St. Joseph's-Long Island ahead 35-25.
The Maccabees though closed out the first half on an 8-0 run to tighten the gap to two points as the Golden Eagles held on to a 35-33 lead at halftime.
St. Joseph's-LI maintained the lead through the early stages of the second half, and the Golden Eagles led by as much as seven.
But down 44-37, the Maccabees raced back with a 10-2 spurt to take their first lead of the half and were up 47-46 with 9:02 to play.
But the game, which saw 10 ties and 12 lead changes, was far from over. Both schools traded leads over the final stages of regulation before ending regulation in a tie.
In the extra session Yeshiva led by as much as four. The Maccabees were up 66-62 with just over two minutes to play before the Golden Eagles closed out the final two plus minutes scoring six unanswered points to win.
The turnovers were relatively even with Yeshiva committing 12 and St. Joseph's-LI 10. But the Golden Eagles capitalized on their opportunities, outscoring the Maccabees 15-2 on points off turnovers.
Yeshiva went to the free throw line 24 times and connected on 13 foul shots. The Golden Eagles connected on 13-of-18 from the charity stripe.
The Maccabees return to action on Monday December 2 for a home contest against the College at Old Westbury at 8 p.m.
