BROOKLYN, N.Y.— The Yeshiva women's basketball team took a large lead early and had enough down the stretch to hold off Medgar Evers College, 70-65, in the opening round of the Dr. Betty Shabazz tournament, hosted by Medgar Evers College.
The Maccabees are now 2-3 on the year, and Yeshiva will now face Hudson Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (HVIAC) foe College of New Rochelle in a non conference showdown at 3 p.m. for the championship.
The Maccabees maintained the lead and increased it through the rest of the half. Yeshiva took a double-digit lead with 4:26 to go in the first half as the Maccabees were ahead 29-18. The lead swelled 17 before halftime as Yeshiva was up 40-23 at the break.
Yeshiva maintained control through the early portion of the second half and led by as much as 22 points midway through and the Maccabees were up 59-37 with 9:44 to play.
But Yeshiva, who only had seven play, had to hold off a hard charging Cougar team late. Medgar Evers used a ferocious 25-6 run in just a seven minute span to chop the Yeshiva lead to three as the Cougars only trailed 65-62 with 2:35 to go.
But a jumper made by Owen, followed by a free throw by Gofine with 1:34 to go, put the Maccabees up by a half dozen and Yeshiva was able to secure the win from there.
Medgar Evers, which had 10 players play, outscored Yeshiva 34-10 on points off the bench.
In Saturday evening's win, the Maccabees had balanced scoring as six players scored in double figures en route to victory. Yeshiva was led by
Julia Owen and
Naomi Gofine with 14 points each, while
Stephanie Greenberg and
Haley David knocked in 11 each.
Rebecca Yoshor and
Rachel Mirsky knocked in 10 points. Yoshor and Gofine added double-doubles in the victory as Yoshor hauled in 13 rebounds and Gofine 12. Gofine also contributed with five assists, while Yoshor had seven steals for the Maccabees.
Medgar Evers was led by Nia Tompkins with 17 points, seven rebounds and six steals, while Kimonia Mullings contributed a double-double off the bench with 12 points and 12 rebounds.
