NEW YORK, N.Y.— The Yeshiva men's basketball team outscored its opponent 44-29 in the second half to overcome a three point halftime deficit and beat John Jay College 69-57 on the road Saturday evening.
With the win, the Maccabees improve to 4-7 overall this season, while John Jay is now 3-6 on the year.
Yisrael Feld led the way for the Maccabees with 24 points to go along with four rebounds and four assists.
Benjy Ritholtz added 19 points, seven rebounds and four assists, while
Shlomo Weissberg knocked in 13 points and had seven rebounds.
Shelby Rosenberg grabbed a game-high nine rebounds for Yeshiva.
John Jay was led by Korede Griffith with 13 points, five rebounds and three steals, while Darell Robinson had 11 points and six assists in a losing cause.
The first twenty minutes saw three lead changes and three ties, but John Jay led most of the time in the first half. The Bloodhounds led by as much as eight during the first stanza, and John Jay led by that margin with 5:54 to go in first half. The Bloodhounds led 12-11 with 9:09 to go before going on a 9-2 run to take a 21-13 lead. A three point field goal by Griffith capped the run.
But the Maccabees rallied right back moments later were back to within a point as Yeshiva countered with a 9-2 run of its own to pull to within a single point. Ritholtz and
Yoni Eckmann combined for the nine points during the spurt, as Ritholtz scored five points and Eckmann four. A three pointer by Ritholtz with 2:58 to go made the score 23-22 at the moment.
John Jay managed to milk the lead over the next few minutes before Yeshiva tied the score with thirty-two seconds left. A three point bucket by Feld made the score 25-25. But with the shot clock off, John Jay scored on the final possession of the first half to go into the intermission ahead 28-25.
In the second half, John Jay went back up by five and led by that margin three separate times during the opening stages of the stanza. After the Bloodhounds took a 34-29 lead, the Maccabees countered with a 7-0 run to take the lead. Ritholtz knocked down a three pointer, then connected on a jumper to tie the score. Then a pair of free throws by Weissberg capped the run to give the Maccabees its first lead since early in the first half.
John Jay tied the score three times, but never took the lead. Each time, the Maccabees had an answer and never trailed again.
Then with the score tied 38-38, Yeshiva powered away with a 9-0 run to distance themselves from the Bloodhounds. The run turned into the
Yisrael Feld show. The freshman sensation netted all nine points during the run, changing the whole complexion of the game. He connected on a three point bucket with 11:37 to go to make the score 47-38.
From that point, John Jay never got back to within less than four points. With 9:59 to go, John Jay's Kendall Jordan connected on a lay-up to make the score 49-45 Yeshiva. But the Maccabees answered with a 7-2 run to regain a comfortable lead.
Yeshiva eventually went ahead by double figures later in the half en route to the victory.
Both teams took care of the ball well as John Jay committed just nine turnovers and Yeshiva 11. Both teams scored 28 points in the paint, and both schools earned 14 second chance points.
