Women's Basketball Set to Kick Off HVWAC Tourney Thursday Night at New Rochelle

YU will face off against College of New Rochelle for the third time this season in the Feb. 14, HVWAC first-round contest.
NEW YORK - The Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference (HVWAC) women's basketball regular season wrapped up Tuesday evening, and the pairings are now set for this week's conference tournament. The Yeshiva University women's basketball team, under the direction of first-year head coach Nesta Felix, is the No. 5 seed for the tournament, and will travel to fourth-seeded College of New Rochelle for an 8 p.m. first-round game Thursday night (Feb. 14).

If you cannot make it to New Rochelle for the contest, the game will have a live stats feed here.

Third-seeded Berkeley will take on sixth-seeded Vaughn College in the other first round contest Thursday at New Rochelle, with tip-off slated for 6 p.m.

The semifinals (Saturday, 6 and 8 p.m.) and finals (Sunday, 4 p.m.) will also take place at New Rochelle's Wellness Center. The YU/CNR winner will take on second-seeded St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn, while the Berkeley/Vaughn victor will draw top-seeded Albany College of Pharmacy.

The host Blue Angels took down the Maccabees on a pair of occasions in the regular season, with each contest coming down to the final minutes. In the teams' HVWAC conference game at CNR on Nov. 29, YU knotted the score up twice in the second half before New Rochelle held on for a 65-57 triumph in which it never led by more than single figures in the latter stanza. Yeshiva sophomore Stephanie Greenberg (Cedarhurst, N.Y.), a three-time HVWAC Rookie of the Week this season (Nov. 27, Dec. 24, Feb. 5), tied the game at 50-all with a backcourt steal and subsequent fastbreak layup with 11:04 remaining. The Blue Angels scored the next nine points, and held on for the win.

Junior Haley David (New York, N.Y.) was 4-for-9 from 3-point range en route to a game-high 23 points for the Macs, while Greenberg contributed 11 points, a game-high seven assists and six steals. Four-time HVWAC Player of the Week (Dec. 4, 11, 18; Jan. 29) and Capital One Academic All-District selection, Rebecca Yoshor (Houston, Texas) picked up a double-double in the low post with 10 points and 11 rebounds against the Blue Angels.

In a non-conference outing between the two squads played in Holliswood, Queens, N.Y. on Feb. 6, CNR took home a 73-64 victory -- but not without a major resurgence from the host Maccabees. YU found itself down as many as 15 points in the first half, and stormed back to take a 52-50 lead with 7:55 remaining on David's trifecta. The Blue Angels then held leads of up to four points over the next four-plus minutes of action, before a stellar free-throw shooting display in the closing minutes allowed them to secure the triumph.

Yoshor scored 22 points and pulled down a game-high 25 caroms, David notched a double-double of her own with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Rita Gordon (Lincolnwood, Ill.) came off the bench to score 12 points while adding seven boards and three steals.

On the season, Yoshor continues her illustrious college career with team-highs of 16.9 points, 14.7 rebounds and 2.24 blocks per contest. Her rebounding average ranks No. 3 in NCAA Division III, while her 15 double-doubles in 17 outings are tied for the 11th-highest mark in the land. Greenberg's 3.71 steals per game mark ranks No. 23 nationally, as she is producing in all facets of the YU backcourt with averages of 15.4 points, 5.6 rebounds and 3.3 assists per contest. David (10.3 ppg, 6.9 rpg) and senior co-captain, Naomi Gofine (Toronto, Ont.), who sports an average of 7.6 caroms per game, have helped YU to own a plus-6.8 rebounding margin throughout the year.
